Cork Insulation in NASA's Deep Space Rocket: Natural Protection Between Fire and Ice

NASA uses foam and cork insulation on the SLS rocket to protect critical systems from extreme launch temperatures and cryogenic conditions.

NASA's Space Launch System (SLS), developed for the Artemis program, demonstrates how critical insulation is in advanced aerospace engineering. The rocket uses cryogenic propellants such as liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, which must remain at extremely low temperatures, while the rocket structure is simultaneously exposed to intense heat, pressure and aerodynamic forces during launch.

To manage these extreme conditions, NASA uses spray-on foam insulation together with traditional materials such as cork. Foam insulation is suitable for large surfaces because it is lightweight and efficient to apply. Cork, however, is used in selected high-heat-load areas where stronger protection is required.

According to NASA, cork is heavier than foam, but it provides stronger protection for certain demanding applications. For this reason, cork is applied in areas such as the SLS core stage engine section, under the solid rocket boosters, and around specific fairings where fuel lines connect different parts of the rocket.

This example shows that cork is far more than a traditional material for stoppers or decorative products. Its thermal protection capability, durability and performance under demanding conditions make it relevant even in high-technology applications such as aerospace engineering.

In this context, cork stands out as a natural material with serious technical value in some of the most demanding environments engineered by humans.
